Second Mentoring Session

For this session the mentees had to set up the equipment without help from either Beck or us  the mentors and then go through all the roles. During this session the groups had an opportunity to change roles so as to get experience of being or working for a TV studio.

For the first two groups, Becks planned a team building exercise that involved breaking the mentees into pairs so that we could share a story that started off bad but then ended in a good way through their actions. This was to highlight the fact that they can turn a bad situation into a good one. For this exercise Becks handed the reins over to Dan and I to take the lead, we performed the exercise for the first two groups but then due to time constraints we didn’t do it for the final group of the day.

Group 6

Today  group 6 did well in terms of setting up the equipment, they got around 95% of it turned on, I felt as though there nothing me and Dan could do because we were instructed not to help at all. This session was abit relaxed because we were just watch the group practice what we taught them. ofcourse we were there to help in case they were stranded. Although there was two people who weren’t present during the first group but everything went smooth.

Group 5 and 4

For these two groups the time went fast as they came in and they were a bit more confident than last time because they sort of new what to do. Dan took the lead in these two groups as i was in the studio helping out in the roles of those that didn’t attend. Overall i believe me and Dan have become more and more confident each day because we have now established a relationship between us the mentors and the mentees.

First mentoring session

On this day i was nervous only because i didn’t know what to expect, when i arrived at the session everyone was ready and i found Becks there which helped me come down the nerves because she said she was taking the lead. The practice session we had in the TV studio to remind our selves on how to use a few equipment was helpful because i now knew what i was talking about.

During the introduction  Becks gave Dan and I a moment to talk about our experiences in the TV studio and because me and Dan had not planned anything to say, we were caught off guard, we didn’t know what to say during the first group. But once you start you can not stop everything just flows. The most important message we gave in  all three sessions was to have fun in the TV studio for it is an extremely fun module and highlighted the importance of teamwork because it is effective to work well as a team. The first time I had to talk to the mentees was quite difficult, the second time came more naturally and the third time I knew exactly what to say and i was more confident  i guess practice makes perfect.

We started with Group 6

Group 6 was the first group we mentored today, Dan and I decided that one person would mentor in the gallery and the other in the studio and then we would switch between the groups, for group 6 I was mentoring in the gallerie nd because i had practised before mentoring i knew how to use each and every equipment in the gallerie. I was more familliar with Vision mixing because that’s what i was doing last year so i found it easy to teach others how to autocue and switch between cameras.

This group had a little difficulty in terms of the VT’s, the director would not give a countdown to the end of the VT  but i dont blame him because the script they were using was a rough copy so it wasnt very important. the important thing was for them to learn and choose their roles because this was just a practice session.

Group 5

For this group, they had most of their team members available even though some were missing. This was quite easier than the first group because we had experience now. Dan and i, now knew exactly what to expect and what to say. Group five had almost every one is their group but they lacked presenters so there was no option left apart from me helping them.

Group 4

For this group they were short of people, so me and Dan had to be presenters. This was the easiest thing we had done for the day, as a result the group sees us as less intimidating and more on the same level as them. Despite being presenters Dan and I did mentor the three people in the studio two camera operators and the floor manager we went through their roles and how to operate the equipment. over role this experience was fun and i feel more confident when ever i have a session with my mentees.

As mentor a code of conduct helps you set bounderies in order to mantain a professional outlook because you don’t want your mentees to becomwe very friendly. A code of conduct is a set of rules that out line the responsabilities of a particular  party or organisation.

Mentors code of conduct that is specific to the peer mentoring sessions

  • I understand that it is expected of all the Peer Mentors and Mentees to be reliable and punctual for scheduled sessions, in order to make the mentoring relationship effective.
  • If there is an issue that a Peer Mentor feels may put a Mentee or someone else in danger, they will have to inform the Mentoring Tutor.
  • I understand that if I am unhappy with my experiences associated with the mentoring processes that I can speak to the Mentoring Tutor about it.
  • Peer Mentors and Mentees must not act in any prejudicial or discriminatory manner towards members of staff, students, visitors or members of the public. They should counteract such behaviours or practices by challenging them and reporting them to the Mentoring Tutor.
  • Peer Mentors must attend all relevant training sessions when required to do so.
  • I must take responsible care of health and safety policies, University codes of practice and follow all University policies which have already been implemented.

2. what is the purpose of this code of conduct?

This code of conduct is to let mentor know when to set bounderies, things they can do and those they aren’t allowed to do. As a mentor you don’t want your mentees to get to used to you or make you one of their friends, even though the mentoring session is a two way thing whereby the mentees are learning but aslo the mentor is learn too.

3.  What health and safety considerations have you considered for working in the TV studio?

The first health and safety consideration is to make sure all the cable hunging around are tapped on the floor to prevent the floor manager and presenters from tripping on them during a live recording session.

The second health and safety consideration is to make sure that every one who uses the ladder in the studio has to have ladder training as the university doesn’t cover any damages or if some one falls off the ladder. so its alway good to have some one with you to help hold the ladder as you climb on top to avoid accidents.

Task 2

In todays lecture we looked at What not to do as a mentor and we discussed the characteristics of a good mentor. This video is used as an example of a bad mentor as we see the relationship between Rory and his mentee is no good. Watching this video helped me understand what it means to be a good mentor as i dont want to be like Rory.

The first thing not to do is, don’t make the trainee feel unwelcome because this will make it hard to establish a good relation between you and the mentee, first empressions are always important as body language plays a big part of how you communicate to people.

The second rule of being a good mentor is not to over load the mentees with information, it is always good to summerise the keypoints of what you are going to teach in that session then break it down if further assistance is needed. Although we had to remind our selves on how everything works in the TV studio, i guess we were lucky to have Bex along as an experienced staff member to help conduct the sessions we have been having with the mentees, this way it was more easier because she’s a bit more experienced than we were.

The third rule is Dont fail to make time for your mentees, a seen in the video a simple HI can make the mentee feel more confortable to tell you things or even ask you a question and when you are a reliable mentor the mentees feel more confortable in your presence. Don’t cancel any arranged meetings with your mentees as this can make them feel like you not reliable and responsible.

A good mentor is supposed to be a good listener, so don’t fail to listen because this shows the mentor that you actually care and respect what the have to say. i think its a two relationshio between a mentor and mentess, i belive as a mentor, your leaning for your mentees and they also learn from you and every one is happy.

The sixth rule is dont discourage your mentess, it is always good to give them balanced feed back as this will help them move forward and gain trust for you.

It feels good to be a student mentor the fact that you can provide help to other students to solve an issue, that makes me feel like i am an important person to my society and community. Things you need to know as a mentor As a student mentor it is not easy to deal with stress and pressure because some of your mentees might be difficult, the best thing to do is keep calm and be well prepaired before each session. Not every one is confident but nothing to worry about because this is something you can gain with in time. if you dont have confidence you have to keep improving on it to be a better tutor or mentor. As a mental you have to put people at ease but this is not as easy as it sounds to do because some people are difficult but for your mentors, it is important so that they can gain trust and feel comfortable around you. As a mentor you also have to be reliable to your mentees as well this also builds trust between you and your mentess. Its is very important as a mentor to be non-judgemental to your mentees because no one is perfect the only thing you can do is to show them how to improve or do things in the right way. you also have to be approachable and friendly some times, so that your mentees can have trust for you and look at you as a role model. As a mentor you have to be good at speaking in public which is also something you gain with in time and it comes with confidence. In this perticular field like TV studio, you also need to know what you are talking about. when you know wat you are talking about it is easy for you to be confident and guide your mentess on a particular set of skills. As a mentor you have to be punctual and a good time keeper because you have to set a good example to your mentees and it gives you enough time to prepaire, get organised to conduct the mentoring session. You also have to be open minded and adaptable because as a mentor i believe you are learning as well as your mentees. The most important thing to do is be honest to you mentees because you do not want to be giving them wrong information or telling them things your not sure about. Working on this project is quite exciting yet very stressful. I have to take on three major roles on this project but that’s great because I will have full control of my project.

I am very excited for people to see the final video as a lot of hard work will be involved and the crew will put in effort to archive great results and I am very proud of them.

After reading the script, I was very eager to get on with the shoot. The intensity of the story gives me the opportunity to use a variety of different shots to show the feel of the lead character. Making the audience feel the characters struggle is the main part that I wanted to get across in this video, so I will focus on using many close up shots throughout. Working on this project gave me the chance to work professionally and play out my role to the best of my ability.

In connection with the Picture, Producer may refer to the Property or any part thereof by any fictitious name and may attribute any fictitious events as occurring on the Property. Owner irrevocably grants to Producer and Producer’s successors and assigns the right, in perpetuity, throughout the universe, to duplicate and recreate all or a portion of the Property and to use such duplicates and recreations in any media and/or manner now known or hereafter devised in connection with the Picture, including without limitation sequels and remakes, merchandising, theme parks and studio tours, and in connection with publicity, promotion and/or advertising for any or all of the foregoing.
  3. Producer agrees to use reasonable care to prevent damage to the Property, and will indemnify and hold Owner harmless from and against any claims or demands arising out of or based upon personal injuries, death or property damage (ordinary wear and tear excepted), suffered by such person(s) resulting directly from any act of negligence on Producer’s part in connection with the work hereunder.
  4. All rights of every nature whatsoever in and to all still pictures, motion pictures, videotapes, photographs and sound recordings made hereunder, shall be owned by Producer and its successors, assigns and licensees, and neither Owner nor any tenant, or other party now or hereafter having an interest in said property, shall have any right of action against Producer or any other party arising out of any use of said still pictures, motion pictures, videotapes, photographs and or sound recordings, whether or not such use is or may claimed to be, defamatory, untrue or censurable in nature. In addition, neither Owner nor any tenant, nor any other party now or hereafter having an interest in the Property, shall have any right of action, including, but not limited to, those based upon invasion of privacy, publicity, defamation, or other civil rights, in connection with the exercise of the permission and/or rights granted by Owner to Producer. If there is a breach by Producer hereunder, Owner shall be limited to an action at law for monetary damages. In no event shall Owner have the right to enjoin the development, production, distribution or exploitation of the Picture.
  5. Force Majeure: If because of illness of actors, director or other essential artists and crew, weather conditions, defective film or equipment or any other occurrence beyond Producer’s control, Producer is unable to start work on the date designated above and/or work in progress is interrupted during use of the Property by Producer, then Producer shall have the right to use the Property at a later date to be mutually agreed upon and/or to extend the period set forth in Paragraph 2, and any such use shall be included in the compensation paid pursuant to Paragraph 3 above.
  6. At any time within 1 month from the date Producer completes its use of the Property hereunder, Producer may, upon not less than five (5) days prior written notice to Owner, reenter and use the Property for such period as may be reasonable necessary to photograph retakes, added scenes, etc. desired by Producer upon the same terms and conditions as contained in this agreement.
  7. Owner warrants neither he or anyone acting for him, gave or agreed to give anything of value, except for use of the Property, to Producer or anyone associated with the production for using said Property as a shooting location.
  8. Owner represents and warrants that he/she is the owner and/or authorized representative of the Property, and that Owner has the authority to grant Producer the permission and rights granted in this agreement, and that no one else’s permission is required. If any question arises regarding Owner’s authority to grant the permission and rights granted in this agreement, Owner agrees to indemnify Producer and assume responsibility for any loss and liability incurred as a result of its breach of the representation of authority contained in this paragraph, including reasonable attorneys’ fees.
